Biography

Karel van der Meer was not only a violin-maker, his knowledge as a violinist and violin teacher was of great importance for his famous workshop. Many foreign violin-makers who, later settled in our country, had been brought to Holland by him. Amongst those are Stüber, Krumholz, J.J. Vedral and Max Möller, who for many years was his chef d'atelier. Van der Meer won recognition on account of the many violins and violas made in his workshop, but also on account of the many bows, the best ones of which were made by the Frenchman Auguste Toussaint, from Mirecourt.
