Biography
Johannes Ernst Bachmann was born on June 13th in 1851 in Amsterdam and named
after his father, Johannes Ernst. After a short education by his father, he
worked for several violinmakers in Germany. In 1878 he started working in Sneek
and in 1879 he moved to Groningen were he lived respectivily on Zuiderdiep,
Nieuwe Ebbingestraat, Heerenstraat 17 and Oude Boteringestraat 10. His business
was called 'Algemeene Muziek-Instrument-Piano- en Orgelhandel'. Bachmann builded
violins after Stradivarius, Maggini, da Salo and Stainer.
There is no known connection with the Swiss Alberto Bachmann, writer of 'An
Encyclopedia of the violin', 1975.
